Dutch-Belgian Border Posts - Sight

Along the border between the Netherlands and Belgium, you will find a remarkable series of historic markers: the Dutch-Belgian border posts.
What can you expect at the Dutch-Belgian border posts?
- Historic border markers: The official border between the Netherlands and Belgium is marked by no fewer than 369 numbered border posts. They date back to the 19th century and are often engraved with years and national symbols.
- Border Post 369 near Het Zwin: One of the most famous posts is Border Post 369, located near the nature reserve Het Zwin. This cast-iron post from 1869 once stood in the mouth of the Zwin, but was washed away by the sea several times. Today, it stands on the north-eastern edge of Het Zwin, just outside the land border.
- From Vaalserberg to the sea: The series begins at Border Post 1 on the Vaalserberg, at 322.7 metres above sea level the highest natural point in the European Netherlands. Together with Post 369, it marks the beginning and end of the approximately 450-kilometre Belgian-Dutch border line.
- Nature, landscape and history: In the Zwin region, you will find border posts in meadows, along dykes, and in the salt marshes of the nature reserve. During a walk or cycle ride, you can explore vast polders, mudflats, salt marshes, and dunes.
- Photogenic views and heritage route: Many border posts are located in scenic spots, making the route particularly photogenic for walkers, cyclists, and photographers. From the dyke near Het Zwin, between Cadzand-Bad and Retranchement, you can enjoy wide views over the polders, the nature reserve, and the Belgian coastline, with places such as Knokke-Heist and Zeebrugge in the distance.
