A historic stop during your exploration of the Zwin area
This small yet impressive defensive structure takes you back to the time of the Eighty Years’ War (1568–1648) and today offers a fine combination of history and nature.
- Historic defensive structure: The fort was built as part of a defensive line around the Zwin channel, intended to repel attacks from the sea. Prince Maurice played an important role in the conquest and development of the defensive lines in this region.
- Remarkable history: Earlier, Fort Terhofstede stood on this site, built by the Spanish in 1584. After storm floods, conquests, and military changes, the present-day Fort Berchem was constructed in the 17th century, a modest square redoubt with earthen ramparts and a moat.
- From military stronghold to plague hospital: Over the centuries, the fort served several purposes. It functioned as a guard house and in 1666 was used to accommodate sick soldiers during a plague epidemic.
